West Tennessee State Parks. Our first stop was the T.O. Fuller State
Park. I believe this park to be our most daring adventure so far. This
state park is found in an extremely challenged neighborhood in south
Memphis. We got caught in a bit of rain on our way out and with the
weather being very hot and humid; the steam was rolling off of the roofs
of dilapidated homes and businesses. It was quite noticeable that a state
park in a rundown neighborhood in TN is not well maintained.
We then headed out of the ‘ghetto’ and on to a safer climate. The
Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park was next on our list. This park
is huge and borders the Mississippi River. We stopped at a little
grocery store on the outskirts of this park for a quick lunch. The
store was quite rustic and the hub of this rural area.
Fort Pillow State Park was our next destination. We were a little late
getting to this park and the office had already closed. Battle grounds
are located on this property. Although long gone, the areas of the Fort
are marked for your benefit.
Monday’s mileage 441.
We then proceeded northward to Dyersburg where we met our
friends from Nebraska. This was our stopping point for the night.
Tom, Arlys and Tom’s golfing buddy, Lonnie were ready to take off the
next morning. They were excited to begin their TN adventure with
Tim as their Harley guide.
Getting an early start on the 8th of September, we headed for the
Reelfoot Lake State Park. There were two enclosures at this park
holding large birds. The largest pen contained Eagles and the other
enclosure held Hawks and Owls. This park is more about the lake
and had some land around the lake.
We made our way back to home base, giving us time to rest and
ready ourselves for our venture into the Great Smoky Mountains
on Thursday.
Tuesday’s mileage 319.
